June’s Grand Theft Impro & Enemies is strong. Quite possibly too strong. And the possibility that it will still be around in a thousand years and end up in the stomach of a Whale is more than I can stand. We should start charging 5p for impro shows.

This month’s enemies are…

Hoof – a terrific long-form improv group from the Monkey Toast stable. No pun intended. But I’m not changing it. GTI guested at their monthly show, downstairs at The Taproom in Islington, and we had a marvelous time.

Then Grand Theft Impro will welcome two special guests. In addition to Sally*, we have, all the way from Los Angeles, Phil’s former double-act partner, Paul Rogan**. For the first half of the nineties, the Sean Connery Brotherhood played comedy clubs, colleges, theatres, corporate stages and festivals across the country, They were on telly a few times and aced Amnesty International’s Secret Compere’s Police Dog show at the Duke of York’s Theatre.

Dylan Emery. Co-founder of Olivier-winning West End, Edinburgh Festival and Radio 4 Impro Hit, Showstopper, Ken Campbell-inspired hard-bardics masterclass, the School of Night and Twoprov show, Ghost Couple with Ruth Bratt.  Dylan’s Crunchy Frog Collective website brings all of the U.K.’s impro under one roof.

*Sally Hodgkiss studied with IO, UCB, and the Annoyance amongst others. Theatre credits include: Sparks (Old Red Lion), The Funfair (HOME), Hobson’s Choice (Sheffield Crucible), The Queen of the North (Bolton Octagon), Plain Jane (Manchester Royal Exchange), A Wondrous Place (Manchester Royal Exchange/Sheffield Crucible), Dinosaur (The Arcola), Northern Spirit (Northern Stage). Film credits include: The Black Dog, Speechless. TV and film credits include: Eastenders, Superhyperliteral, Hard Words Improv credits include: The Actor’s Nightmare, Stephen Frost Improv Allstars, The Committee, Bumper Blyton.

**Paul Rogan has improvised all over the world – with, among others, the Comedy Store Players, double-act, the Sean Connery Brotherhood and Eddie Izzard and Friends. Now resident in L.A., he is a member of Impro Theatre – he’s been in Jane Austen UnScripted, and Shakespeare, Dickens, Tennessee Williams, Horror, Twilight Zone and Western equivalents. He has also worked in LA with Off The Wall and LA Connection. Film and TV work includes My Name is Earl, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Sleeper Cell. He has represented England at the Montreal Just For Laughs Festival three times – once with Phil.

Phil Whelans – writer and performer of his own Radio 4 sitcom, My First Planet, founder member of Pros from Dover – with whom he did two series of Radio 4’s The Infinite Monkey Cage. Phil has worked with everyone from Joan Rivers to Basil Brush, Al Gore to Brian Conley, Robin Williams to Giles Brandreth.  Phil has been in It’s Kevin, Brasseye, Preston Front and a number of unsuccessful radio and TV impro pilots. He has appeared in Showstopper: the Improvised Musical and is a Monkey Toast player.

Missing this show will result in some uncomfortable questions being asked and, quite possibly, some soul-searching.
